Narrative:

Occupants of an east side apartment complex were alerted to a fire in their building after a neighbor ran door-to-door to alert them to the fire. The woman saw smoke coming from the building a block away and had another neighbor call 911 as she ran to tell the people inside they needed to get out.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 3:06 p.m. to find heavy smoke coming from a first floor unit at 912 Vernon Avenue. As Engine Co. 5 pulled a bumper line from the fire engine, they approached the back side of the building and encountered thick black smoke. They quickly began fire attack and had the fire knocked down within 10 minutes. The fire was isolated to the single unit.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but one person will be displaced due to extensive damage to the apartment. All other occupants were able to return home. There were no injuries.

Investigators remain on scene to try to determine the cause. Damage estimates are not yet available.
