Fire Extinguished After Open-Flame Warming Device Falls Into Trash
Madison, WI
Firefighters were called to a sorority house when a Sterno can, used to keep catered food warm, fell into a nearby trash can, lighting the contents on fire.
One occupant explained to firefighters that the sorority was hosting an event with food catered in. The warming rack closest to the end of the counter was accidentally tipped over, and the Sterno can fell into the trash. A quick-thinking attendee grabbed a wall-mounted fire extinguisher and discharged it into the trash bin, effectively putting out the fire right away.
Ladder Company 1 inspected the area and confirmed the fire was contained to the trash bin. Although the building is protected by fire sprinklers, firefighters relayed their concerns about using open-flame Sterno cans in close proximity to combustible materials like kitchen cabinets.
There was no property damage to the building or to the trash can itself. All occupants were invited to return to the gathering, though the remaining food needed to be thrown out.
