Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department is investigating a fire that occurred on the east side Tuesday morning.

Multiple callers dialed 911 to report fire coming from a house on the 5400 block of Spicebush Lane. The occupants were not home at the time of the fire, but dogs were heard barking inside.

Upon arrival, Engine Co. 5 observed smoke and flames on the exterior of the house, near the front door. As they secured a water supply, Engine Co. 13 began fire attack, achieving knockdown within six minutes of MFD's arrival. Engine Co. 5 performed search and rescue, safely retrieving two dogs from the home. The dogs were returned to their owners in good health. Two cats also reside in the home but could not be located and are presumed safe.

Thanks to early reports from witnesses and a fast response from MFD, the fire did not extend into the interior; however, smoke from the fire did cause enough interior damage to displace the two occupants and their pets.

The MFD Fire Investigation Team is looking into what caused the fire. Damage estimates are not yet available.
