The Madison Fire Department's Fire Investigation Team has ruled this fire accidental. Evidence suggests a heater located in the bathroom may have malfunctioned while coming into contact with towels hanging nearby. There were no other potential ignition sources in the area of the fire's origin.

Narrative: 

Fire caused significant smoke damage to an apartment on Madison's north side this morning.

The Madison Fire Department was dispatched at 11:03 am to the 3700 block of E. Karstens Drive after a resident noticed heavy smoke on the second floor of the 8 unit apartment building.

Firefighters arrived within 5 minutes and entered an apartment filled with thick, black smoke from ceiling to floor. The fire was located and quickly extinguished. Fire crews searched for occupants in the apartment and ventilated the smoke from the building.

The apartment residents were not home at the time of the fire. They are working with their insurance company to arrange temporary living accommodations and fire damage clean-up and repairs.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported. The fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damage.
