Fire Crews Contain Diesel Spill Following Car-Versus-Semi Crash
Madison, WI
Ladder Co. 7 was called to the intersection of Verona Road and Atticus Way for a crash involving a car and semi truck.
No injuries were reported in the crash; however, the collision did cause a rupture in one of the semi’s fuel tanks and a diesel leak in the roadway. Firefighters used wood plugs and putty to slow down the leak, then they placed a tank trap below the leak to contain the fuel. The crew also placed an absorbent powder known as “Oil Dry” on the pavement to soak up the fuel that had already spilled into the roadway.
It’s estimated that approximately 7-10 gallons of diesel leaked out of the tank prior to intervention by firefighters. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified of the spill, which resulted in some diesel fuel entering a nearby storm sewer drain. A tow company was called to remove the disabled semi from the intersection.
