Arrival:

Address:
I-90 Westbound
Madison, WI 53717
Narrative:

A persistent gas leak made it very difficult for firefighters to take down a vehicle fire on the westbound Interstate Friday.

Engine Company 5 was dispatched for a white Chevy Blazer pulled over toward the median near mile marker 140.2. Witnesses reported to 911 dispatchers that the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames, though all occupants made it out safely.

Engine 5 attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to do so with the 500 gallons of tank water aboard their engine. A fuel leak continued to feed the fire, and the owner said he’d just filled up the gas tank.

Engine 5 called for Engine Company 8 to assist. Traffic conditions on the Interstate made it difficult for Engine 8 to get there quickly, but once on scene Engine 8 was able to put out the fire.

The owner stated he had just purchased the vehicle at a state surplus auction for about $1400. The car was not insured and is considered a total loss.
