Narrative:

Eighteen people are displaced following a fire that caused severe damage to the Greystone Condominiums at 703 Cricket Lane. There were no injuries or fatalities.

The Madison Fire Department was dispatched to this location after multiple 911 callers reported fire in the back of the building, and that it was spreading fast. Black smoke was seen on the horizon as crews approached from afar, and Medic 2 reported heavy flames as they arrived on scene.

Firefighter/Paramedics immediately made entry into one unit to search for occupants and pets who reportedly may still be inside, according to 911 callers. One dog was rescued right away and brought to the care of a neighbor. A second dog was later found unscathed and returned to its owners, who were not at home at the time of the fire.

As search and rescue continued in adjacent units, Engine Company 12, Ladder Company 7, Ladder Company 2, and a cohort of 37 total firefighters focused on knocking down the blaze which spread along the upper level of the complex. Initial knockdown was achieved at 11:41 a.m., and crews continued to douse spot fires that flared up in the aftermath.

At least three condo units suffered severe fire damage, and others were impacted by smoke and/or water. A total of seven condo units were affected by this fire.

Madison Metro provided a cooling bus for displaced occupants, Madison Police provided traffic control and assistance with occupant services, and neighbors provided cold water and additional places for people and pets to stay.

All occupants have been accounted for and reunited with their animals, which included dogs, cats, a bearded dragon, and frogs.

Damage estimates are not yet available. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
