Dispatch:

Arrival:
Monday, January 23, 2017 - 3:31pm
Address:
400 block W. Mifflin St.
Madison, WI 53703
Narrative:

A downtown city block is temporarily closed to traffic as firefighters keep an eye on a construction site where a fire began earlier this afternoon.

Engine Company 1 was dispatched to 431 W. Mifflin Street, the site of the future Mifflander Apartments, to investigate reported “off-gassing” resulting from foam installation sprayed into the ceiling.

Firefighters found that the insulation wasn't off-gassing; it was producing smoke. After cutting a hole in the wall to investigate further, they found active flames inside, and the call was upgraded to a full structure fire response. Upon extinguishing the fire, crews overhauled the area and cooled any hot spots.

As of 5:00 p.m., Ladder 1 and Engine 1 remain on scene as the foam insulation continues to produce heat which could ignite another fire. They estimate the 400 block of W. Mifflin Street will remained closed for about another hour.
