Address:
1200 block W. Dayton St.
Madison, WI
Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department was called to investigate an alarm at the UW-Madison Computer Sciences building (1210 W. Dayton Street) Saturday. The call came just as Badgers fans were descending on Union South and Camp Randall Stadium in anticipation of the afternoon home football game.

Firefighters on Ladder 1 were directed to a downstairs room containing servers and electronic services. They discovered a burned motor inside the air handling system. Light smoke had filled the room, and the air handling units were shut off to limit smoke distribution.

Engines 1 and 4, along with Ladder 6, assisted with smoke removal before turning the building back over to the UW at about 1:10 p.m.

Because the Computer Sciences building is used as a power sub-station, many campus buildings, including Union South, were temporarily without power.

The power outage affected Witte Hall (615 W. Johnson St.), where one student was stuck inside an elevator on the fourth floor. Engine 3 responded at approximately 12:30 p.m. and successfully removed the student from the elevator without incident.
