Wheeler Road and a nearby boat launch were closed off to the public briefly Sunday morning as firefighters, Madison Police, and MGE responded to the intersection of School Road and Wheeler Road for an arcing power pole. 

A passerby told crews he was out for walk and heard a “zap” sound before seeing smoke momentarily from the top of the arcing power pole.

There was no fire from the pole, only arcing, when Engine Company 10 arrived at 7:43 a.m. Two live power lines connected to the pole sagged low toward a boat launch across a gravel road.

MPD closed off Wheeler Road in both directions, and firefighters notified nearby hikers and people attempting to approach the boat launch to stay out of the area due to the electrical hazards present.

MGE arrived around 8:45 a.m. to take over the scene and proceed with repairs to the power line. MFD was released from the scene shortly thereafter.
