Narrative:
A Ridgeway Ave. man said he smoked a cigarette and discarded the butt on the ground near a wood pile Tuesday afternoon just before lying down for a nap.
When he woke an hour later he smelled smoke and soon discovered the wood pile and part of the siding of the house on fire.
He initially used a dry chemical extinguisher to knock down the fire, then he sprayed down the hot spots with a garden hose.
Ladder 8 arrived and thoroughly overhauled the wood pile. Firefighters checked surrounding areas for fire extension.
The house was ventilated to clear away the smoke. In addition to the home siding, a nearby bicycle and chair were also damaged by the fire.
