Address:
400 block W. Main Street
Madison, WI
Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department responded to the 400 block of West Main Street Sunday evening for a report of fire coming from a third-floor window of an apartment building. Ladder Company 1 located the unit and found fire in the kitchen. Firefighters extinguished the fire and cooled the area where the fire burned to make sure it was completely extinguished.

The occupant informed firefighters he’d left his apartment for a little while and heard a smoke detector sounding when he returned. He found fire on and above the stove and attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher. His attempts at extinguishing the fire on his own were unsuccessful. The smoke eventually became overpowering and he evacuated the building. A neighbor also attempted to help, but firefighters, who were now on scene, instructed the neighbor to also leave the building.

Paramedics treated the occupant for minor injuries sustained during the incident but he was not taken to the hospital. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined.

The Madison Fire Department reminds everybody that if you find fire in the home, the safest thing to do is to exit the building immediately, closing doors and windows behind you when able, and calling 911 right away. If your building is equipped with a fire alarm pull station, activate the pull station to alert your neighbors that they should evacuate, too.
