Narrative: 

A resident was displaced after a fire in the downtown Madison area early Saturday.

Engine 1 responded to 1 N. Bedford Street, The Bassett Warehouse Apartments a three-story 27-unit apartment complex, about 7:30 a.m. to an alarm investigation. It was then upgraded to a full fire response after residents reported smoke in the hallway. Firefighters entered the apartment on the first floor and encountered heavy smoke and flames. The fire crews quickly located and extinguished the fire. The fire was not found in the kitchen area.

The resident was not home at the time of the fire, but has been displaced due to smoke and fire damage.

No injuries were reported.

Damages are estimated at $20,000, and the cause is under investigation.

The American Red Cross is assisting the only occupant, but currently has a place to stay.
