Address:
100 block N. Butler St.
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A fire in a downtown apartment was caught early thanks to early warning from a concerned neighbor who heard alarms and smelled smoke in the area.

Engine Co. 1 and other central fire units responded to the 100 block of N. Butler Street. The 911 caller met firefighters and pointed them toward where she believed the problem to be. As firefighters made their way up the stairs, they could smell wood burning and eventually happened upon light gray smoke. Ladder Co. 1 assisted Engine Co. 1 with locating the source. Firefighters ultimately found fire coming from a window jamb on the third floor. A water can extinguisher was deployed to put out the fire.

Investigators determined the fire started because of improperly discarded smoking materials. Nobody was home at the time of the fire.
