Fire investigators determined the cause of this fire to be unattended cooking. No other information is available at this time as the death investigation remains ongoing by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.

Narrative: 

Engine Co. 4 was dispatched to 730 Braxton Place to investigate an odor in the building, possibly the odor of something burning. Firefighters arrived and searched the building for the source. One apartment unit was found with evidence of a fire that had self-extinguished. During a routine search of the unit, firefighters also found one occupant deceased.

The Madison Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Whether the death was caused by the fire remains under investigation and will be determined by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. The death is not believed to be suspicious.
