Arrival:
Saturday, June 12, 2021 - 1:18pm
Address:
2600 block Pheasant Ridge Trail
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A fire that burned a large area of grassland and threatened a nearby building was the result of illegal use of fireworks.

Ladder Co. 6 was dispatched to the 2600 block of Pheasant Ridge Trail after 911 callers advised fire was spreading across the vegetation to nearby trees and buildings. Upon arrival, firefighters located a 50-foot by 20-foot area with active spot fires. Ladder 6 pulled their 200-foot pre-connect line and started attacking the wildfire from the east. Engine Co. 1 arrived to fight the fire from the west. Approximately 600 gallons for water with foam concentrate were required to put out the fire.

Firefighters did locate a pile of fireworks still smoldering in the parking lot. Town of Madison Police responded to assist with locating the individuals responsible. The fire was caught quickly enough that no injuries or property damage resulted from the incident.

Safety Tip: While summer is a popular time to bring out the fireworks, they are illegal in the City of Madison, Village of Shorewood Hills, Town of Blooming Grove, and Town of Madison. Snakes, sparklers, caps, and party poppers are permitted; however, the public is asked to reconsider using them during this time of drought and high fire risk. If using these products, only use them on non-combustible surfaces like concrete. They should also be properly extinguished in water before being placed in the garbage.
