Fire Department

Firefighters responded to Barnes & Noble Booksellers at East Town Mall after a witness reported seeing fire above the lighted sign at the main entrance to the store. Engine Co. 8 arrived on scene and confirmed the presence of fire. One of the letters in the lighted sign was burning, and some burning materials dropped down onto a ledge below. Firefighters noted the wiring to the lighting was also arcing.

Firefighters set up a ground ladder and ascended to the signage while others entered the store to shut down electrical power to the sign. The fire was extinguished using a water can extinguisher. Ladder Co. 8 checked for fire extension on the roof and other areas surrounding the sign. No additional fire was found.

There was no damage to the building. Fire damage was contained to just one of the letters in the sign.
