Arrival:
Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - 10:26pm
Address:
2700 block Union Street
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A chimney fire was caught early and caused no lasting damage thanks to an observant homeowner who didn’t hesitate to call 911.

Firefighters responded to Union Street after a resident reported hearing crackling inside the flue of his chimney and, after stepping outside, found flames coming from the chimney cap.

Ladder Company 8 arrived moments later to find creosote glowing inside the chimney cap. They entered the house and used a thermal imaging camera to determine whether fire had spread elsewhere. They determined the fire was confined to the chimney.

After making their way to the roof, firefighters removed the chimney cap and extinguished the fire using two bags of dry chemical extinguisher agent known as “chimney bombs.” The homeowner provided a chimney cleaning brush, and Ladder 8 cleared the remaining creosote from the top of the flue.

The homeowner was advised to have the chimney inspected before using it again, and was reminded to clean it regularly to prevent creosote buildup.
