Arrival:
Friday, January 18, 2019 - 9:45am
Address:
1000 block Spaight Street
Madison, WI
Narrative:

A cracked candle is what sent firefighters to an eastside residence.  Ladder Company 1 arrived first to the 1000 block of Spaight Street to find a light haze coming from the front door and one occupant standing outside.

The occupant told firefighters she was preparing to leave for work when she heard the smoke alarm go off in another room. Smelling smoke, she grabbed a fire extinguisher and found flames at about hip height. She deployed the fire extinguisher, and the fire was out prior to Ladder 1’s arrival.

Ladder Company 1 entered the apartment to investigate, finding a small candle on a bedside table. The glass container of the candle cracked, allowing wax to flow onto a cotton cloth that covered the nightstand.

Ladder 1 and Engine 1 opened doors and began ventilating the home. There was no damage to any property other than to the bedside table.
