Engine Company 5 responded to an apartment on Siggelkow Road, where a fire alarm activated. The occupant told firefighters she was going to cook some chicken, and the oil in the pan created a lot of smoke. Firefighters noted there was a star-shaped smoke stain above the sink. Asked if there was actually a fire, the occupant reluctantly admitted the oil had started on fire, and she brought the pan to the sink to run water over it.

Firefighters explained to the occupant she should avoid such actions if oil ever catches fire again in the future, noting that water can cause the burning oil to splatter, creating massive fire and burns.

Instead, firefighters recommend placing a cover on the pan, dumping baking soda on the fire, or having a Class-K extinguisher available to put out this type of fire. In this case, nobody was injured, and the occupant acknowledged the safety tips provided by Engine Company 5.
