Incident Type:
Outdoor
Dispatch:
Tuesday, December 20, 2016 - 2:44pm
Arrival:
Tuesday, December 20, 2016 - 2:49pm
Address:
2600 block Kendall Ave.
Madison, WI
Narrative:

Some construction workers at a project on Kendall Ave. were hoping to thaw the frozen ground where they soon intended to dig and place a post. Their plan of action was to burn a small fire inside a barrel and hope that the ground warmed up underneath.

It might have made sense at the time, but unbeknownst to the well-meaning workers, it was against the City of Madison Outdoor Burning Ordinance.

Engine Company 9 paid a visit to the address and inspected the “burn barrel.” While the materials inside consisted of clean dry wood and produced minimal smoke, the fire wasn’t in an approved container. It may also have been too close to the building where they were working.

The workers explained they weren’t aware of the City’s ordinance, and firefighters shoveled some snow into the barrel to extinguish the small fire.
