Clothes Catch Fire At Local Laundromat; Static Electricity May Be To Blame
Madison, WI 53713
Ladder Company 6 and other MFD crews were called to a laundromat on Todd Drive for a reported dryer fire.
One witness said she was moving some clothes around when she looked into a dryer that was running and noticed the clothes inside were on fire as they tumbled about. She quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and opened the dryer door to put out the fire. Then she tossed in some water from the bathroom using a trash can.
The clothes were still smoldering when Ladder Company 6 arrived. Firefighters put the items in a bucket and soaked them some more.
The owner of the laundromat was on site. He put a coin in the dryer where the fire started, and the dryer ran and heated appropriately. He said he’s had the appliances for over 15 years and has never had a fire occur. He did say cotton and polyester, of which these clothing items and towels were made, will create static electricity if a dryer sheet isn’t used.
The fire damaged the clothes and the dryer, and the broken glass from the fire extinguisher case will need to be replaced.
