Firefighters and MG&E were called to the 100 block of State Street for a report of a significant gas leak at 1:13 pm.

Employees of Ian’s Pizza called 911, shortly after 1:00 pm to report a natural gas leak. They tried to shut the gas off, but needed assistance from the fire department. Employee’s informed people to evacuate the building prior to firefighter’s arrival.

Madison Police helped clear the area of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Many people were in the State Street and Capital vicinity, because of the Farmer’s Market and nice weather.
Fire crews ventilated the building and also checked for gas in adjacent buildings.

Most fire crews were returned at 1:51pm, while firefighters from Ladder 1 cleared from the scene at 2:47pm.

MG&E is still on scene.
