Westside firefighters were dispatched to a home on Antietam Lane for a chimney fire.
 
Ladder Company 2 noted fire coming from the top of the chimney upon their arrival, and from the outside it appeared the fire was isolated to the chimney.
 
Ladder 2 took to the roof as firefighter/paramedics on Medic 2 went inside with water to cool the wood burning in the fireplace.
 
Using a thermal imaging camera, firefighters checked all walls for heat and possible fire extension. Upon removing the chimney cap, flames continued to rise out the top of the chimney.
 
A tarp was placed in front of the interior fireplace to limit airflow as firefighters deployed a chimney bomb to extinguish the fire. Chimney bombs contain a dry chemical extinguishing agent which releases into the chimney upon contact with fire.
 
After the fire was extinguished, the chimney and house were re-evaluated for fire extension. When it was determined that the fire was completely out and had not extended, Ladder 2 and Ladder 7 advised the homeowners not to use the fireplace again until they contact a company to evaluate the chimney.
