Arrival:
Friday, March 31, 2017 - 10:53pm
Address:
2500 block Calypso Road
Madison, WI 53706
Narrative:

Firefighters could see smoke rising from across Warner Park as they pulled out of their north side station on Troy Drive. They were dispatched to a vehicle fire on the 2500 block of Calypso Road after a passerby noticed smoking coming from the front of the car.

Engine Company 10 found the 2002 Chevy Impala parked along the curb. Firefighters pulled their 100-foot bumper line and charged it with water and foam. The vehicle's engine compartment was fully involved, and there was no extension into the passenger compartment. There were no occupants inside.

Firefighters had to break out the driver’s side window in order to gain access to the hood release lever, which did not work. The ultimately accessed the engine compartment through the front grill. They had the fire out within a few minutes of being on scene.

The owner eventually came outside and identified himself to firefighters. He said he just bought the car a couple days ago from a friend for $300 and it was running fine. Other than topping off the oil earlier that night and replacing a tire, he hadn’t experienced any problems with the car. He cleared out his belongings, and the totaled vehicle was towed away.

It's unknown how the fire started.
