A Madison man is recovering today after surviving sudden cardiac arrest over the weekend. His survival is thanks in part to early intervention that came at the hands of loved ones and the Madison Fire Chief.

Chief Steven Davis received an urgent knock on his door Saturday night from a neighbor reporting that her son-in-law wasn’t breathing and that his wife had already begun chest compressions. Davis grabbed his portable AED, which all MFD chiefs and PulsePoint Verified Responders carry off-duty, and promptly responded to the neighbor’s house.

Davis took over chest compressions, and one shock was delivered from the AED. The patient began breathing following the first shock, but moments later his heart rhythm returned to ventricular fibrillation. Chest compressions resumed.

Medic 10 and Engine Co. 10 then arrived and took over patient care. As high-quality compressions and ventilation continued, lifesaving medications were administered. Another shock from the defibrillator was advised, and a second shock was delivered to the patient.

The second shock was successful in re-establishing a pulse. Paramedics moved the patient to the ambulance, where he continued to receive critical care as he was transported to UW Hospital.

By the time the ambulance arrived to the ER, the patient was alert and responding to paramedics. He is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday.
