Large amounts of smoke began to spread along Northport Drive Thursday afternoon after a pile of green leaves was tossed into a fire pit. One concerned neighbor called 911 fearing a house may be on fire.

Engine Company 10 located the source of the smoke and spoke to the resident who was attending the backyard fire. Although he was burning in an approved container, he was informed that burning leaves is prohibited in the City of Madison due to the amount of smoke it produces.

Firefighters shared a copy of the City’s Outdoor and Open Burning ordinance, and the resident agreed to burn only clean dry wood in the future.
