Address:
2000 Taft Street
Madison, WI
Narrative:

The Madison Fire Department was called to the 2000 block of Taft Street just before 7:30 pm this evening. Ladder 6 had just completed a call nearby and arrived on scene one minute after being dispatched. As they entered the building they encountered smoke in the hallway. They moved forward and found an apartment heavily charged with smoke. They located a small fire in the kitchen and were able to quickly extinguish it. A search was made to make sure that all residents had gotten out safely and the building was ventilated with fans to remove the smoke.
The fire was isolated to the kitchen and there was minimal damage to the structure; however the resident will not be able to stay in the apartment due to damage to the electrical wiring from the fire.
The apartment door remained open during evacuation and some smoke entered the hallway but was stopped by the fire door at the end of the hall which was closed. Without that fire door there would have been more chance for the fire to grow and much more smoke damage would have occurred throughout the building. Please remember to keep all fire doors closed when they are not in use and close as many doors as possible behind you as you exit a building during a fire.
