Three construction workers and two East High School maintenance workers are credited with saving a man’s life when he struggled to get out of his burning home.
 
Firefighters were called to the 100 block of N. Fifth Street after the workers saw smoke from their vantage point at the nearby high school parking lot. At the urging of the five concerned men who stood outside a first-floor window, the occupant crawled to the window and was pulled from house just before Engine Company 3 arrived. Paramedics transported him to the hospital.
 
Light smoke was coming out of the home when firefighters approached, but they were met with heavy smoke and flames upon entering. Search and rescue operations confirmed no other people were trapped inside. Following fire attack and knock-down, extensive overhaul took place because fire had extended into the walls and ceiling.
 
Two dogs were taken to the Dane County Humane Society. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial damage estimates were at $30,000-$35,000; however, totals now rest at an estimated $100,000 following investigation.
