20th Century American Short Stories
Location(s):
Most avid readers are familiar with the short stories
of O. Henry, John Steinbeck, and Ernest Hemingway,
to name a few. There are many other authors, known
chiefly for the novel form, who have written wonderful
short stories. We will explore many: Porter, Salinger,
Runyon, Wharton, Malamud, Carver, etc.! Let’s meet
every other week and discuss 2-3 short stories of the
same author, or the same time period, or the same
topic—any commonality to lend a perspective beyond
the writers style, content and message. Our first
session will be devoted to a discussion on the genesis
of the form and then move on to Mark Twain’s, “The
Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country”. We
will decide on future selections as a group.
