Swimmer Rescued From Lake Monona Was City of Madison Firefighter

On Sunday, June 9, the City of Madison Fire Department treated and transported two Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin athletes who were rescued from Lake Monona during separate emergencies. The first patient was pronounced dead at the hospital and was later identified by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office as Michael McCulloch of Cottage Grove, WI.

The MFD confirms the second patient at Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Wisconsin swimming event was Todd Mahoney, an Apparatus Engineer with the City of Madison Fire Department. Mahoney was rescued from the water at 8:52 a.m. Sunday, and lifesaving attempts continued as he was transported to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Mahoney fought for his life over the next 48 hours. He passed away earlier today at the hospital. Mahoney was 38 years old.

Mahoney was a nine-year veteran of the Madison Fire Department, most recently serving as an Apparatus Engineer at Fire Station 1 in downtown Madison and occasional Chief’s Aide for Command Car 31. He previously served at Fire Station 9 on Midvale Boulevard, and he was a paramedic at Fire Station 8 on Lien Road. He began his career as a firefighter in 2010. He is survived by his wife and three young sons.

The Madison Fire Department would like to thank its Peer Support Team, City of Madison Employee Assistance Program, and the IAFF Member Assistance Program, for their ongoing support and counsel as our members grieve the loss of their beloved colleague. MFD would also like to thank members of Fire Fighters Local 311 for supporting the Mahoney family during this time.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause of Mahoney’s death. The Madison Fire Department has no further updates at this time. More information may be released as it becomes available.
