A new way to discover, collect and enjoy local music

Madison Public Library and Murfie Music are pleased to announce a new way to discover, collect and enjoy local music: the Yahara Music Library at yaharamusic.org.

Yahara Music Library is an online music collection that celebrates Madison’s dynamic music scene by sharing local music with the greater Madison community. The diverse collection includes established musicians and up and coming artists who play everything from rock, hip hop, classical, and more. Musicians with albums in Yahara Music Library include Beth Kille, Natty Nation, The Gomers, Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society, Ida Jo, DJ Pain 1, F. Stokes, Ben Sidran, Spooner, Spires that in the Sunset Rise, and many more.

Yahara Music Library is a free collection accessible to anyone who holds a library card issued by any public library in the South Central Library System (WI).  Library card holders can access music in Yahara Music Library using any web browser or by downloading albums in multiple formats to a variety of devices.

Musicians Matter
Madison Public Library established the Yahara Music Library to share local music and support local musicians. Visitors to Yahara Music Library will find more than just music. At launch, album pages will feature extra information like reviews, biographies, and information about upcoming shows, and links to the musicians’ websites, social media, and online stores.

Wisconsin native and nationally-recognized producer DJ Pain 1 describes the Yahara Music Library as "a rare partnership between Madison's talented-yet-underrepresented music community, its residents, and a major institution, the Madison Public Library. [Yahara] simultaneously showcases Madison musicians through a mutually-beneficial professional partnership and makes the musical element of Madison accessible to virtually all Madisonians." 19-time Madison Area Music Award winner Beth Kille says: "This a great opportunity for area musicians to get their music to potential new audiences. Kudos to the Yahara Music Library!"

Open Source
Developed through collaboration between Madison Public Library and Murfie Music, the Yahara Music Library was created with a belief in the importance of open source development.  Murfie and Madison Public Library are releasing technical elements of the Yahara Music Library under an open source license, allowing others to contribute to the project’s design or create their own iterations of the project. Yahara runs on a combination of this open source code and elements that were developed by Murfie. Institutions creating their own version of this project can develop their own system or work with Murfie to use theirs. The project can be found at github.com
