Today, after a rain delay on Wednesday and more than a month's delay due to COVID-19, the Goodman Pool opened to the public. The first 500 guests were surprised to learn their admission was free today, thanks to Goodman’s Jewelers!

After learning the Goodman Pool was indeed opening for the 2020 season, John Hayes of Goodman’s Jewelers immediately contacted the Madison Parks Foundation. Despite Goodman’s Jewelers' own setbacks this year, John and his wife Catherine felt strongly that the tradition of sponsoring the first 500 swimmers must continue. John shared in a recent email, “I am proud to be able to open the pool in honor of Bob and Irwin every year. My wife and I, as well as my staff, all believe in giving back. It gives us great pleasure to be able to carry on the Goodman’s legacy.”

Madison’s first municipal pool opened in 2006. Irwin and Bob Goodman were long-time supporters of many organizations in Madison, including Madison Parks. Their donation of $2.8 million for the construction of the pool was just the incentive needed to get a pool built in Madison. Even after the pool’s opening, they continued supporting it by establishing a scholarship fund.

“I am impressed by and grateful for the generosity of our community. We sincerely appreciate John and Catherine’s continued support of promoting access to the Goodman Pool in our community,” said Parks Superintendent, Eric Knepp.

Established in 1933 by Bob and Irwin Goodman, Goodman's Jewelers is Madison's oldest full-service jewelry store. In 1998 long-time employee, John Hayes purchased Goodman's Jewelers from the Goodman Brothers. After nearly 90 years, the store remains at its original location on historic State Street, just two blocks from the State Capital.
The Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Pool, located at 325 W. Olin Ave., is open, weather permitting with numerous adjustments. All guests are asked to review the Rules & Expectations, before visiting to learn of the 2020 season modifications, such as arriving with your suit and mask on and new 2-hour recreation swim sessions.

Madison Parks Foundation has donated $40,000 towards pool admission scholarships, along with the Goodman Foundation’s generous matching dollar for dollar donation through August 31. With decreased support this year due to the impacts of COVID-19, the Foundation is asking area businesses and individuals to consider donating to this important community asset and help make the pool inclusive and accessible to the entire community.
