Electronics must be delivered to the Streets Division’s drop-off sites, or to a reputable private electronics recycler in the area. These steps will protect your data and ensure the hazardous materials inside them are handled and recycled safely.

Many common electronic items, like televisions, computers, and printers, are banned from landfills in Wisconsin. These items should not be placed to the curb or in the collection carts.

For a list of electronics banned from the landfill go to www.cityofmadison.com/ecycle or consult the Electronics Recycling section of the Recyclopedia.

Many other electronic items like Christmas tree lights, vacuums, stereo equipment, gaming systems, kitchen appliances, hair dryers, and so on can be recycled at the drop-off sites, too.

Guidelines for Recycling Televisions, Computers, Laptops, and Monitors.
Do not place televisions, computers, laptops, or monitors at the curb for collection.

They must be brought to a drop-off site for recycling.

Televisions, computers, laptops, and monitors all require a recycling fee.

You have the following options to paying the recyclig nfee:

  • Use the work order system. A sticker will be mailed to the valid City of Madison address entered into the form. The sticker must be on the item before it will be accepted at the drop-off sites.
  • Call the Streets Division offices to purchase the stickers over the phone. Stickers will be mailed following purchase. The sticker must be on the item before it will be accepted at the drop-off sites.
  • Buy the stickers in person at the Streets Division offices at 1501 W. Badger Rd or 4602 Sycamore Ave.
    • Stickers cannot be purchased by the staff within the drop-off site area. Stickers are only sold by office staff.

Drop-off Sites Information
Residents can bring one load of items accepted at the drop-off site per day.

The single load cannot be larger than what would fit into a standard pick-up truck bed or small single-axle trailer. Loads larger than those guidelines will be denied access.

Drop-off sites are for City of Madison residents and taxpayers only. Contractors may not use these facilities.

In order to use the sites, individuals must provide proof they are a resident of the City of Madison. Many individuals show their driver’s license, but other official documents like utility bills or rental agreements can be used.

Check the drop-off site website to be sure you know the location of the sites and their hours before loading your vehicle.

Businesses Cannot Use Streets Division Drop-off Sites for Electronics Recycling
Since the City of Madison is part of the Wisconsin DNR e-Cycle program, businesses may not use the drop-off sites for electronics recycling.
