Age

The City generally requires applicants to be 18 years old. It will be noted on the job announcement if applicants under age 18 are allowed to apply.

Criminal Background Checks

For certain positions, an employment offer is made based on the applicant passing a criminal background check. The City evaluates whether past convictions are substantially related to the job duties. The City does not discriminate based on arrest or conviction record. If a job offer is withdrawn, the candidate will be informed of the reasons why this occurred.

Driver’s License

The job announcement will indicate if the position requires a valid driver’s license or a CDL (Commercial Drive’s License).

Driver's Abstract

If you hold an out of state license, you will need to submit a driver’s abstract from your state. This does not need to be part of your application, but must be submitted to Human Resources. Please contact the Department of Motor Vehicles, or equivalent agency, from the proper state and ask for an official driver’s abstract.

If the application period has not closed, resubmit your application with the abstract as an attachment. If the application period has closed, email the abstract to the HR Analyst in charge of the recruitment.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

If you are applying for a position that requires a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), you must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse. The City of Madison must perform a full query of anyone before hiring them into a safety sensitive position. Registered applicants must consent to the full query via the online Clearinghouse. Visit the online Clearinghouse to register or to learn more.

This does not apply to positions at Madison Metro Transit.

Drug Testing & Physical Exams

For certain positions, an employment offer is made based on the applicant passing a pre-employment physical or a drug test.

Immigration

The City of Madison does not offer visa sponsorships. Within three days of hire, all new employees are required to provide documentation confirming legal right to work in the United States.

Residency

Consistent with State law, the City of Madison does not have a residency requirement for most positions. Any residency requirement will be listed on the job announcement.

Veterans’ Preference

In order for veteran’s points to be applied, a legible copy of the DD214 or other allowable documentation must be attached to the job application. If a veteran is seeking additional points because of a duty-related disability, such documentation must also be attached along with the DD214. Once points have been used to obtain permanent employment, they may not be used again.
