Music was a peaceful yet powerful force in the Civil Rights Movement. Learn about its significance from UW-Madison Professor of Afro-American History and Odyssey teacher, Dr. Craig Werner. We will watch and discuss an excerpt from the documentary, "Freedom Riders" which demonstrates the use of song as a unifying and mobilizing force. Odyssey graduate, Rene'Robinson, will sing some of the important songs such as "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round" and "Woke Up This Morning with My Mind Set on Freedom." Refreshments and discussion following program. This event is part of a series, Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle Film Discussion Series. Funding for the series was provided by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
