Ephemeral, Interactive Sculpture at James Madison Park

A temporary, collectively woven hammock sculpture will stand for one month in James Madison Park, facilitating a heartwarming opportunity to hold and be held. This project is collaboration between Angèle Nyberg, dancer and choreographer, Ava Padilla, three-dimensional artist working with locally sourced botanicals, and all who decide to participate!

Participants are invited to weave reclaimed, naturally dyed strips of fabric into an upright hammock wall. The structure tilts back slightly, welcoming us to lean or soften into the weaving and find a meditative gaze over the lake.

The opening ceremony for ‘To Hold You’ takes place at James Madison Park, Sunday November 21 from 3:00pm-5:00pm. During this time there will be an opportunity to engage with the artist’s, decorate the strips of fabric, and weave them into the hammock netting. At 4:00pm, there will be a guided moving meditation led by Angèle Nyberg.

Weather permitting, the sculpture will remain standing in James Madison Park until December 12, 2021. The structure will continue to evolve throughout this timeframe as fabrics are continually woven through the netting. Tentatively, the closing ceremony will take place at James Madison Park December 12, 2021, 2:00pm-4:00pm.

The Madison Arts Commission commissioned this artist proposed project through the BLINK Program. BLINK invites artists to provide a temporary tangible glimpse into their imaginations. MAC funds projects for up to $1500 each. BLINK is an opportunity for experimental, ad-hoc, temporary works of art to sprout up throughout the community and vanish, leaving residents and visitors eager to see what is next. Madison neighborhoods and urban areas are open canvases. 2022 Blink Proposal Deadlines are: February 1, June 1, and October 1
