I want to thank the Quattrone Center for their independent Sentinel Event Review, and express my appreciation for the thousands of hours of work that went into it. I particularly want to thank the many members of the Madison community who submitted testimony and information to the reviewers and worked with the Quattrone Center on its recommendations. I appreciate the Madison Police Department for requesting the review– my office was told they were the only police department in the nation to make such a request – and Assistant Chief Valenta for facilitating the effort.

I hope that our residents, boards and committees will take a look at the report and tell us what they think. Chief Barnes and I both believe in continuous improvement, and with dozens of recommendations, I am sure there is much to learn from this report.

I have had a chance to review the executive summary and a constant theme is communication, communication before, during and after protest events. It’s apparent that clearer communication would build trust and help ensure public safety.

Chief Barnes came to Madison eager to build bridges and build trust. He is already working towards many of these goals and I look forward to working with him and his team on these recommendations.
