Madison Mayor Paul Soglin today announced the appointment of Thomas Lynch as the Director of the City of Madison’s Department of Transportation.

Mr. Lynch has worked for Strand Associates since 1992 and has extensive transportation planning experience with local, state and federal units of government. He has managed highly complex transportation studies including the Monona Drive reconstruction project, the Verona Road Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), the Madison Beltline Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study, and currently he has been active with the John Nolen Corridor-Blair Street Corridor design development. Mr. Lynch assisted WisDOT in the development of Complete Street design standards and provided state-wide training on Complete Streets standards. Tom has worked on transportation planning projects in four states and has worked with many Dane County area governmental entities, including Monona, Middleton, Fitchburg, Dane County, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

As Director of the Transportation Department, Mr. Lynch will lead the Divisions of Traffic Engineering, Parking and Transit. The Transportation Director will lead the City’s cross-department transportation planning team and will also be the lead staff for the City’s Transportation Policy and Planning Board. He will be the City’s lead contact for state and federal transportation coordination, oversee transportation studies and plans, and manage transportation projects as needed. Tom is committed to integrating all modes to develop a sustainable transportation network that serves all who live in and come to Madison.

Mayor Paul Soglin said, "Tom Lynch’s deep and broad transportation background, especially in Madison and the Madison area, gives me confidence that he will be an excellent leader for the Transportation Department. He is well prepared to work with policy makers, other managers and other transportation professionals to achieve the City’s transportation goals during these challenging times."

The Common Council is expected to vote on Lynch’s appointment at their meeting on June 19.
