Madison - Mayor Dave Cieslewicz praised today's action by the Senate Democrats to give the City of Madison and other municipalities the option of offering domestic partner benefits to their employees. Under current law, municipalities who offer health insurance to their employees through the state health insurance system are unable to offer such benefits.

The Senate provision, included in their version of the biennial state budget, would also provide domestic partner benefits for state workers employed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and elsewhere.

"Today's action is a strong statement in support of fairness, and in support of attracting and retaining the best possible workforce," said Mayor Cieslewicz. "I am pleased to see state government following in the footsteps of the private sector, where domestic partner benefits are offered by more and more companies every day. Very simply, it's the right thing to do, and I am grateful to the Senate Democrats for standing up for fairness."
