Drilling is wrapping up this month on what will be Madison’s first new water well in a decade. Crews have spent the last two months slowly drilling a 915-foot hole to reach the aquifer that runs below the city. When it’s put into service in 2016, the new well at 4901 Tradewinds Parkway will provide water for much of Madison’s southeast side. It will also mean better fire protection and more reliable service.

Although drilling will soon be finished, years more work lie ahead before the well can be put into service. Madison Water Utility will be installing a water pump, determining capacity, collecting water quality samples, and building a pump station and reservoir.

The city currently has 22 active wells, the newest of which is on Madison’s south side. Drilling on that well began in 2003. It was put into service in 2006.
