The Madison Fire Department wants everyone to enjoy a safe, injury- and fire-free Independence Day. City of Madison residents are reminded that City ordinance bans the use of Roman candles, fountains, bottle rockets, firecrackers, and similar products often sold at nearby roadside stands.
 
Penalties for use of illegal fireworks within city limits can range from $172 to $1000, plus court costs.
 
Legal products allowed in Madison include sparklers, snakes, snaps, caps, and party poppers; however, these items still present fire and burn hazards. For example, sparklers burn at a temperature of more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to cause third-degree burns.
 
Always use caution when lighting these products. Only do so on non-combustible surfaces like concrete. Dispose of them in a bucket of water, and make sure they are completely cool before throwing them in the trash.
 
Statistically, children and young adults are the most likely to be injured by fireworks and similar products. Parents and other responsible adults should provide close supervision to reduce the chances of accident or injury.
