When placing large items out to the curb, please follow the below placement guidelines:

  • Do not pile bagged trash or recyclables on top of large items or appliances set out for collection.
  • Keep items away from obstructions like fire hydrants and street signs
    • Also do not place items under overhead obstructions like low-hanging wires and low tree limbs.
  • Keep metal items, such as filing cabinets or bed frames, separate from other material so they can be easily collected and recycled.

The Streets Division uses a truck-mounted crane to collect large items, and we also use two-person crews to lift things from the curb. Following the above guidelines will help keep the workers safe and make the collection faster so crews disrupt traffic less.

Remember the Work Order System
A separate release earlier in the week explained how the new work order system will work for residents living within the Student Move Out Area during the August moving days.

Please review that release or check the Streets Division’s Moving Days webpage to be sure you are using the system the right way.

If you live outside of the Student Move Out area and have questions regarding the new large item system, please review the large item work order's frequently asked question webpage.

Drop-off Sites
Madison residents can also dispose of large items Streets Division drop-off site. Excess trash and recycling can also be taken to the drop-off site, along with many other items.

Residents are restricted to one load a day.

The single load cannot be larger than what would fit into a standard pick-up truck bed or small single-axle trailer. Loads larger than those guidelines will be denied access.

In order to use the sites, individuals must provide proof they are a resident of the City of Madison. Many individuals show their driver’s license, but other official documents like utility bills or rental agreements can work as well.

The drop-off sites are located at 4602 Sycamore Ave. and 1501 W. Badger Rd. Check the drop-off site website to confirm the hours of operation before loading your vehicle.
