Do not place televisions, computers, laptops, or monitors at the curb

The annual August moving days ritual in downtown Madison will begin soon. On top of packing, hauling, and saying goodbyes, movers need to decide just what to do with all their unwanted stuff.

This is the fourth and final release from the Streets Division for moving days this year. The links below will lead to the previous releases.  All of the information about how to handle and donate your things during moving days can also be found on the Streets Division website, www.cityofmadison.com/movingdays.

Electronics Recycling Information
Many common electronic items, like televisions, computers, and printers, are banned from landfills in Wisconsin. Many other items like Christmas tree lights and vacuums can be recycled, too.  However, do not place these items into the recycling carts.

How to Recycle Electronics
Electronics must be delivered to the Streets Division’s drop-off sites, or to a reputable private electronics recycler in the area that will protect your data and handle the material safely.

Guidelines for Television Recycling
Do not place televisions at the curb for collection. They must be brought to a drop-off site for recycling. There is a recycling fee for each television.

Guidelines for Computer & Laptop Recycling
Do not place computers, monitors, or laptops at the curb for collection. They must be brought to a drop-off site for recycling. There is a recycling fee for each computer or laptop.

Guidelines for Recycling Electronics Banned from Landfills & Other Electronics
Do not place  electronics that are banned from the landfill out for collection, like printers and DVD players. These items must be recycled. They must be taken to a drop-off site.

For a list of electronics banned from the landfill go to www.cityofmadison.com/ecycle or consult the Electronics Recycling section of the Recyclopedia.

Other electronics can be recycled as well, like Christmas tree lights or vacuums. These, too, should be taken to a drop-off site in order to be recycled.

Using the Streets Division Drop-off Sites
The Streets Division offers drop-off site services for all residents of the City of Madison.

In order to use the drop-off site to recycle electronics, or drop off other items, you need to prove you are a City of Madison resident by showing your driver’s license or another official document (such as vehicle registration or lease documents) that shows residency within Madison.

The drop-off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd. on the southwest side and 4602 Sycamore Ave. on the east side.

This time of year, the drop-off sites are open 8:30am to 4:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The sites are open 8:30am to 8:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Drop-off site hours will change in December.

Recycling Sticker Sales
Televisions, computers, and laptops require a recycling fee sticker.

Stickers can be purchased at the Streets Division offices at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave. between the hours of 7:30am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

Attendants at the drop-off site do not sell recycling fee stickers. Stickers are only sold in the office during the normal office hours noted above.

Stickers can also be purchased at any city of Madison public library and the Treasurer’s office in the City-County Building, Room 107.

Stickers can be purchased online at www.madisonpay.com , but stickers will need to be mailed to you after purchase.
