Dozens Of Burn Permits Issued In The City Of Madison

With a forecast calling for sun and mild to warm temperatures, many permit holders may conduct their annual prairie burns this weekend.

The Madison Fire Department has issued 44 active burn permits for prairie restoration activities so far this season. These permits vary from small natural lawn areas to large parks or nature preserves. Permit holders range from homeowners to highly-skilled and equipped professionals.

Residents located near the sites of prairie burns conducted by the City of Madison Parks Division were notified that these permits were issued; however, this is a general notice to the public that burn activities may occur throughout the city.

During a natural lawn or prairie burn, it’s natural to see smoke and flames. Permit holders are required to have the necessary personnel and equipment on hand to control and extinguish the fire. The fire must be under control at all times.

While natural lawn and prairie burns are authorized through a permit application process, the Madison Fire Department reminds residents that burning yard waste, brush, garden refuse, and other such materials is prohibited. People wishing to enjoy an outside fire this weekend must do so using an approved fireplace or fire pit, and may only burn clean, dry wood.
