Kidde Recalls Plastic-Handled Extinguishers

On November 2, 2017, Kidde and the Consumer Protection Safety Center (CPSC) initiated a nationwide recall of fire extinguishers that do not perform as intended in case of emergency. There have been multiple reports of extinguisher failure, including 16 injuries and 1 related death due to reported failures.

While fire extinguishers in business occupancies are required to be checked annually by a licensed professional in the City of Madison, we are asking that everyone to check your extinguishers NOW to see if they are part of this recall.

Kidde has provided a range of ways to check whether your extinguisher is covered as part of this recall effort. For more information on the recall, please visit the CPSC recall website.

If you do have fire extinguishers that are included in this recall, please contact Kidde directly at 1-855-271-0773 or through their fire extinguisher recall website. They will direct you on how to properly dispose of your old extinguisher and will send you a new one at no charge.

Madison does have several local fire extinguisher sales, service, and installation companies that are happy to help with any questions you may have about fire extinguishers. You may also contact the Madison Fire Department Fire Prevention Division at 608-266-4420.

We have also included some Frequently Asked Questions and an Identification Guide as part of this release.

Thank you for your help and cooperation in keeping Madison a safe and healthy place to live, work, and visit.
