For the first time since 2019, the Madison Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of fulltime firefighter/EMT. Becoming a firefighter/EMT is a unique opportunity to make a difference in a person’s life – and a direct impact in our community – every single day. No previous fire or EMS experience is necessary to apply.

The Madison Fire Department seeks a diverse pool of candidates interested in a career devoted to public service. In the spirit of inclusion and accessibility, this year’s application process incorporates new approaches that aim to minimize barriers while adapting to changing economic and technological landscapes since the Covid-19 pandemic. These innovations include:

• Online-based testing: Candidates who advance to the initial testing round will be invited to take the video-based multiple-choice exam online. These proctored tests can be scheduled during times outside of standard business hours, and tests will be administered over an 8-week period. Local and nationwide testing centers are also available for individuals who do not have internet access, a personal computer, or access to a quiet environment conducive to test taking. Previously, this test was administered in person, during business hours, with only one day and testing location offered.
• Streamlined interview process: The department has consolidated its interview process to reduce the overall time commitment required for the in-person components of this multi-dimensional process. The goal is to keep qualified candidates engaged with the career opportunity amid existing demands at home and work.
• Removal of the U.S. citizenship requirement: Anyone with a legal right to work in the United States is now eligible to apply to be a firefighter/EMT in the City of Madison, regardless of citizenship status. Passion for public service and commitment to community are not bound by citizenship. If an applicant cares about the City of Madison and wants to serve as a firefighter/EMT, the department wants them to know the process is open and welcoming to them, regardless of citizenship status.

Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, November 30 at 11:59 p.m. (Central Time). Applications must be submitted online through the City of Madison’s employment website.
