Project Description

The City of Madison is planning a new street, which will connect Darbo Drive to Webb Avenue. The street would split the block where the Salvation Army is located, connecting Darbo Drive to the south, to the “kink” on Webb Avenue to the north. The new street is intended to provide better connectivity through the neighborhood, and to provide better access to the three commercial sites at 3002 Darbo Drive, 3059 E. Washington, and 3077 E. Washington (southwest of the Department of Corrections). These properties currently are only accessed off of the E. Washington frontage road, via Webb Avenue.

A Public Information Meeting to discuss the project was held on Thursday September 28th.
 

Update Due to State Law Change

While the City desires a pedestrian connection, sidewalks will not be installed with the project except along the Webb Avenue frontage of 3023 Webb Avenue. This is the result of a new state law (enacted with the budget in Sept 2017) which prohibits municipalities from using their established process for acquiring land (condemnation), for purposes of building pedestrian ways (sidewalks).

Racial Equity Social Justice Tool

The City is using the Racial Equity and Social Justice Tool on this project. The purpose of the tool is to facilitate conscious consideration of equity and examine how communities of color and low-income populations will be affected by a proposed action/decision of the City. A draft of the tool is posted below. Please note that the questions in the document are a starting point, and the document will be revised and updated as we incorporate feedback.
